What Is The Older Person’s Grant SASSA?
Older Person’s Grant is the SASSA Senior Grant, the grant intended to assist primarily citizens above the age of 60 years. For these millions and millions of seniors, it becomes the foundation for sustaining at least basic needs. On average, they make such payments every month to help financially the people in need.
Eligibility For The SASSA Senior Grant
According to the Older Person’s Grant eligibility requirements for 2025:
- Age Requirement: You must be 60 years of age or older.
- Residency: Must be resident in South Africa as a permanent resident, citizen, or refugee.
- Attend an Income Means Test: Your income and assets should not exceed the limits set by the government: Single Applicant: annual earnings should not exceed R91,056, and asset holdings should not exceed R1,313,400. Married Applicant: Joint total annual income should not exceed R182,112 and total asset value should be below R2,626,800.
- Not Already Beneficiary of Another Government Grant:
You cannot receive this grant if you are also enrolled in any other government social grant programs, except the child support grant.
SASSA Senior Grant Amounts For January 2025
The Older Person’s Grant has undergone annual increment to facilitate older persons to cope with enhanced costs of their day-to-day living. The amounts for January 2025 are as follows:
- Standard Grant: Pays up to R2,100 per month.
- Beneficiaries 75 years and older: Additional R20, totaling R2,120 per month.
Payment Dates In January 2025
Every month, SASSA adheres to the same payment schedule, and this January 2025, the dates will be:
- Older Person’s Grant: As of Tuesday, January 2, 2025.
- Other grants and aids including disability and child support will immediately follow all seniors.
Beneficiaries can access their funds through:
- SASSA cards
- Bank accounts
- Post Office branches
- Authorized retailers and ATMs.
How To Apply For The SASSA Senior Grant
If you are yet to make an application for the Older Person’s Grant, follow the guidelines below.

- SASSA Gold Card Holders: If your card is running out of shelf life, ensure that it is updated; Postbank is going to issue replacement cards as from 2025.
