As the cost of living continues to increase, calls for an increase in the grant amount from the South African Social Security Agency or SASSA Child Support Grant in the year 2025 have intensified by experts and lobbying groups. Currently, this Child Support Grant, usually referred to as just CSG, amounts to R530 per child per month, and has helped millions in families survive situations that can only be described as harsh. Now, though, due to the most recent economic conditions, much of it is being argued that it is not enough for much basic needs that children are living under.
What Exists In The Case For Higher Payments?
Economic strains such as inflation, increasing unemployment rates, and high food prices have placed enormous strain on family budgets. Such households now find it much more difficult to use CSG for basic necessities like food, school items, and clothing.
“The R530 monthly grant is no longer sufficient when one thinks about the increasing price rates of basic goods,” said Prof. Nomsa Zulu, specialist in social welfare. “What we require is a grant amount that takes into account the realistic economic environment, so that children do not get deprived from accessing their very basic rights.”
Research shows that even the average household monthly cost in South Africa is way above what they get from the CSG. The advocacy organization Black Sash calls for an increase to at least R700 a month, which is equivalent to the food poverty line as put by Statistics South Africa.
Current Statistics On The SASSA Child Support Grant
The SASSA Child Support Grant makes up an eligible population exceeding 12.8 million children, thus being the largest social grant program in the country. The grant is intended particularly for caregivers otherwise referred to as parents, guardians, and grandparents with children under the age of 18 years.
The caregivers of orphan children may also benefit from a top-up grant of R250 over and above the base amount of R530. This increased their total to R780 per month. Though, this amount is a step forward it still pales in comparison to the expert views regarding the rising cost of living.
Criteria For eligibility At The CSG 2025
The 2025 qualification for the grant is on the following principles of care:
01. Residence And Citizenship
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
- Both the caregiver and child must reside in South Africa.
02. Income Threshold Or Age Limit
- Caregivers must below the means test threshold, which is R60,000 annually for single caregivers and R120,000 for married couples.
- The grant is for children under the age of 18.
03. Documents Required
- Valid South African ID or refugee permit.
- Birth certificate of the child.
- Proof of income or an affidavit ifunemployed.
The Case For An Increase
The act of raising the CSG will have tremendous impact such as:
- Better Nutrition: Making children have enriched diets.
- Improved Education Results: Easing the parents’ burden of school supplies and their fees.
- More money in the economy: Lifting poverty in these communities.
Dr. Thabo Nkosi, economist: “Higher grant payments that the government puts into children will translate into lower long-term economic costs, as investments will produce healthier and more educated manpower.”
Government Response
This statement leaves room for speculation, and with no official pronouncements yet made regarding a hike in the CSG, the department of social development has taken note of the rising concern. In her statement, Minister Lindiwe Zulu said: “We are looking into the possibility of adjusting social grant levels so that they reflect better the needs of our people, particularly children.”
