SRD Grant Extension 2025 : Universal Basic Income (UBI): A universal basic income is a new policy concept under review to radically and universally replace the limited relief of distress grant system [Social Relief of Distress, or SRD for short], which was established to alleviate poverty for individuals who are unemployed or underemployed. Instead, because the UBI is not directly linked to employment, it is given to all residents in grants. In this case, the grant is worth R350 and transfers to an account opened with a bank. With a policy refined and developed by President Ramaphosa in consultation with Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, it will also incorporate municipal impact indicators.
Universal Basic Income theory has no connection to a person’s employment status-or, for that matter, his wealth for that matter.
What Is UBI?
A Universal Basic Income (UBI) system is a social welfare program where everybody, regardless of occupation or wealth status, is guaranteed a fixed income every month. Such a form of welfare is what South Africa is likely to introduce into its social security system by 2025 to take over the R350 grant under the SRD. The UBI paradigm is supposed to secure each South African at least a certain basic payment, which would make a dent in poverty reduction, inequality reduction, and improvement in financial stability.
Why Is UBI Replacing SRD Grants?
The grant of the SRD R350, as temporary relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, became a lifeline to millions of unemployed South African citizens. This grant was launched during the rampant COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa, along with other governments’ grants from around the world. The government, however, decided that a universal basic income will be more helpful in the long term rather than just a laid-off worker’s much-needed relief. It is anticipated that phasing out SRD grants for a secure and better future and replacing them with broadband universal grants will have a list of reasons:
- Ensuring sustainable financial support: The Department is not just looking to address poverty but is looking fo a way that the people of South Africa can enjoy a pillar of support on which to lean in times of need, and most importantly, in times of economic prosperity.
- Promote poverty alleviation: Giving citizens a guarantee income, rather, was the project. South Africa would have seen a significant reduction in the number of households living below the poverty line, with severe increases in the quality of life for millions of South Africans.
- Facilitating economic participation: Universal basic income guarantees no discrimination and thus applies to every person, thereby pushing the need for greater involvement in economic activities such as in business, education, health, etc.
Key Details Of UBI Implementation
- Broad Base: Where the SRD grant is exclusive to the unemployed only, and has to be received by a limited number who can meet stipulated criteria, the UBI is expected to go to all citizens of South Africa.
- Grant Amount: The actual amount will only be announced at some stage up to 2025, but unofficial reports suggest it will be more than SRD grants of R350. The government is considering the amount to ensure at least a basic form of financial stability.
- Funding and sustainability: tax revenue and other government resources will fund the idea of UBI, which will provide the stimulus for the system to be sustainable by tapping into sustainable funding means for UBI itself and could continuously develop without causing a negative impact on the national economy.
- Transition Period: It is expected that the SRD R350 2025 grant will carry on for a few months until UBI is completely implemented. It will remain in a transitional stage with the old one until more people are gradually transferred to the new system.
Impact On Future Grant Recipients
The phase-out of the e R350 SRD grant, on which many South Africans depend for some money, will seed some initial doubts. But here are the expected benefits of the introduction of UBI; the instrument is beneficial in the following ways:
- Enlarged Accessibility: As per UBI, all South Africans, irrespective of employment status, will have access to it.
- Financial Stability: Given a basic income guarantee, UBI basically intends to guarantee financial stability, particularly for those in underemployment or unemployment.
- Long-Term security: UBI, which is treated as temporary during the SRD period, will remain integrated into the permanent structure of the national welfare system.
Challenges And Concerns
So, although there is a great deal of optimism in the universal basic income endeavors, several questions going on in the people’s minds today are still unsure.
- Funding Shortfalls: The major concern is regarding the fact that it is quite unclear right now as far as how the government could ever be able to afford a UBI in the first place, considering all these hard times.
- Potential Inflation: Some say it may result in an increase in prices for both goods and services. Some economists have already cried foul, contending an increased UBI only means inflationary pressures.
- Effect on Employment: Opponents say that it could induce laziness among people, preventing them from doing anything productive because they now have the liberty to choose based on what they enjoy versus what really is significant to society.
